CHAPTER ELEVEN

IT WAS AS if she’d just woken up from an erotic dream. Disorientated, breathless, hot. And very confused.

Because this wasn’t a dream.

It was a very real encounter.

Ed was next to her, also catching his breath, warm and trembling.

She rested her head against his chest and he pulled her against him, each anchoring the other as the waves of pleasure continued to wash through them.

She brought her breath in time with his and enjoyed the feeling of his firm chest against her cheek.

You’ve just made love with the King, a little voice whispered in her head.

But she dismissed it easily. He might be the King, but he was still just Ed too.

You’ve just made love with Ed.

She was incapable of moving even an inch because of the happy chemicals still thumping through her body.

And the shock.

And Ed’s arm, flung across her, trapping her where she’d fallen.

His breathing was heavy, his face sweaty. His head tipped back and he looked up at the ceiling as he groaned.

‘Oh, Sim. I can’t believe we’ve only just realised we could do that.’

She was in real trouble.

Over the years Simone had often sought solace in the thought that maybe Ed wasn’t very good in bed. That maybe they weren’t physically compatible. It hadn’t been a silly thought. They were relaxed in one another’s company, and ease in public didn’t always translate into heat in the bedroom. It might just as easily lead to something very bland. Maybe Ed, under his suits and underwear, was really not that much...

How wrong she had been.

Not only was Ed really all that and more under his clothes, he had also been at constant pains to please her. She shouldn’t be surprised. He was her kind and caring friend. But, strangely, she had expected him to be more selfish in bed than he was. And Ed had most definitely been generous. Over and over again.

Her heart was in more danger than ever.

Ed isn’t going to marry, and you aren’t going to marry a prince.

No one, least of all Ed, was talking about marriage. This was just a one-off. Completing what they had started in Paris. That was all. A fling.

Can you really have an emotion-free fling with Ed?

She was about to find out.

‘You know what I said in Paris?’ he murmured.

He’d said so many things in Paris, but she knew what he meant.

‘Do you think we’ve just ruined our friendship?’

‘No, I don’t feel differently about you,’ she said honestly.

So many things had changed between them in the past few months. She cared for him as much as ever, but her emotions were closer to the surface, instead of being safely locked away.

He made a face. ‘Really? Then I needed to try harder. Can I have another go?’

She laughed, but he didn’t. His face was still calm and serious.

‘Do you...feel differently about me?’ she asked.

‘I’ve felt differently since Paris,’ he replied.

Her stomach swooped. ‘What do you mean?’

She was afraid she wouldn’t hear his answer over the roar of blood rushing past her ears.
